Adopt-A-School Project

The island of Leyte is the largest Visayan Islands in the Philippines. Education is an important part of Filipino culture, but unfortunately, most schools do not have the funds to provide their students and teachers with basic school supplies, such as pencils, paper, books, or chalk. In most rural schools, the school is a one room building, with one teacher and several grades are taught together in the one classroom. The education of these children is suffering because they do not have the materials to conduct class and lessons on a daily basis...but…you or your classroom can help change that!

How you/ your class can help improve the quality of education of children in Leyte

You can adopt a school in the Philippines for one year, and make a huge difference in the school year for the children of the school you adopt. By adopting a school, you will provide the children of that school with school supplies for one whole year! These supplies will include: books, pencils, paper, and chalk.

How can I or my class adopt a school?

Email vfv.info@visayans.org or aldous.moro@visayans.org and notify them of your intention to be part of the program.

Project ideas for teachers who want to Adopt a School with their class

Make Adopt a School a classroom project! Ideas to get your class involved:

Have your students organize a fundraiser to raise the money to Adopt a school. Fundraiser ideas: Classroom bake sale, aluminum can recycling- have students bring in their soda cans to school, and keep them in the classroom- at the end of each week cash in the cans, and on Monday see how much money you have raised thru turning in your cans, have the students hold change or penny drive- have them bring in their spare change or pennies to raise the money. OR, you can help out by gathering old books and other educational materials that we can give to the schools. If the freight cost is too much for you, you can send it to the GoAbroad Foundation, our sister company in Denver, Colorado.

In addition to having the students raise the money themselves, you can educate the students on the area of the world they are helping out by study South East Asia or the Philippines with your class. We can provide links to information about the Philippines that can be helpful to your class.
