High School Volunteers from California Create Waste Management Project

by Jennette Fariola

High School Volunteers

Volunteers from the different countries around the world come to the Philippines to experience Filipino life and at the same time, help in their own little way those underpreviledged children in VFV's placements; the orphanage in the city that houses abandoned children from different places, the streetchildren, the rural school children and the poor community in general.

Volunteers paintingThe first group of volunteers to come through the organization were high school students, accompanied by their cool and active teacher, Ms. Krista Deboer, from California. With the group's stay in the BLISS Community, they were able to come up with the waste management project.

The group's waste management project included making four sets of trash bins that were placed at different areas in the barangay. The group collected empty plastic containers, painted them and labeled them with biodegradable and non-biodegradable labels for the right segregation of wastes.

The residents of the barangay however responded positively to the group's project. They were able to understand the use of those trash bins and the importance of the waste segregation and cleanliness in the barangay.
