Jacksonville University to Send Social Work Study Abroad Group

By Troy Peden

Join Jacksonville University faculty this summer and spend a few weeks exploring the past, present and future of the Philippines. Take a look back at Spanish Colonial rule and the influence of Spain and the United States on these unique tropical islands. The course will focus on comparative social welfare systems and the needs of social work in the developing world. Students will join in local fiestas and help build a brighter future for those in need by working on a local community project. Today, 40% of their 80 million inhabitants live under the poverty level. This service–learning project allows students to earn credit while volunteering their time on various projects including orphanage work, working with street children, the environment, and community development. Students can earn university credit, use federal financial aid and earn community service hours.
