Jacksonville University Group - A Visit to the Philippines

JU Volunteers on the Jeepney It was not until I was 46 years old that I first traveled outside of my home country, the United States of America. As Director of the Community Service-Learning Center at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida, I went with a group of university students to Costa Rica, for a spring break service trip in 2003. That trip gave me a glimpse of the world outside of the United States.

VFV Turns Two!

by Angelynne V. Dumagsa

SDCC Children

We are pleased to announce that the Volunteer for the Visayans will be celebrating its 2nd anniversary in the last week of July! As we look back, we can say that VFV organization has grown tremendously and this is proven by the number of projects we have undertaken, the ever increasing number of local and international volunteers who participate in our programs and the families and communities we have helped.

On that momentous week, starting on July 21st to July 28th, 2006, we have prepared a line up of activities that will surely keep the surrounding Bliss community buzzing with excitement! Here are some of the events:

July 21st – A fundraising concert “Rock the Community” will be held in the Bliss gymnasium. Tickets will be sold for only P40 and the proceeds will be used to fund upcoming projects in Bliss as well as the children in the garbage dumpsite area near San Juanico bridge!

July 26th – On this day, local residents of Clusters I and II in Bliss and the international volunteers will be working side by side to clean and beautify the whole Bliss area. “Pintakasi” (as the project is called) will be showcasing the spirit of volunteerism, camaraderie and friendship across cultures!

July 27th – Ask anyone who's been to the Philippines and they'll tell you Filipino's are practically addicted to snacking. Sari-stores and bakeries can be found in almost every corner from the smallest towns to the biggest cities. To settle the Who's-The-Best-Cook issue in the surrounding community, we will be launching the “Cookfest 2006” on this day!

July 28th – The finale and culminating event of our 2nd anniversary is the “Cultural Night” wherein the various clubs, local residents of Bliss, VFV and GoAbroad staff (among others) will be presenting their talents!

We would also like to take the opportunity to thank all of the local and international volunteers and the generous people who donated and supported our projects. Without their support and generosity, Volunteer for the Visayans would not have been able to reach out to so many families in so many communities. Everyone is invited to come and witness this joyous occasion!
