Jacksonville University Group - A Visit to the Philippines

JU Volunteers on the Jeepney It was not until I was 46 years old that I first traveled outside of my home country, the United States of America. VFV turns Bliss Community to Brightly Painted Houses

by Crispina M. Reynera

Volunteers House Painting

Blue, pink, yellow, green and red! These are the colors of the houses one would not expect when entering Bliss. Bright and colorful paints were mixed this summer. Local and international volunteers gathered together to make minor renovations and major painting in the surrounding houses of the Bliss, particularly the houses surrounding the basketball court. This is in connection to the beautification project of VFV in Cluster II.

Work crews were comprised of one international volunteer and a number of local volunteers were assigned to do the painting and minor renovations in each house. The respective family homeowners were also involved in the event by selecting the colors of the paints and in the renovation of the facades of their houses. As the people worked on the houses, the community transformed from a dull grey to a flower garden of colors. The new charm of the neighborhood gives the community members pride in their beautiful homes and their neighborhood.
