Jacksonville University Group - A Visit to the Philippines

JU Volunteers on the Jeepney It was not until I was 46 years old that I first traveled outside of my home country, the United States of America. As Director of the Community Service-Learning Center at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida, I went with a group of university students to Costa Rica, for a spring break service trip in 2003. Another School Year for the Sponsored Kids

by Jennete T. Fariola

Sponsored Kid's

June 2006 opens another school year here in the Philippines. This is the time and the chance for the kids to learn more and grow more, with the help of the very-dedicated educators. With the opening of classes, the VFV provided the kids with their school needs and as well as with their school fees, as part of the program.

The Ate and Kuya session, wherein we organize tutorial and other fun and learning activities for the kids, will continue to help the sponsored kids with their studies. This activity also provides time for the Ate/Kuya to get to know the sponsored kid better.

At the end of their classes during the past school year, we organized a recognition day for the sponsored kids, wherein we gave special awards to the kids who excelled in class and who are very participative with the Sponsor-A-Kid program and its activities. This activity would be in one way be helpful for the kids so that they would be motivated to aim high in class and impress their sponsors as well. We want to see an improvement from the kids with the help of the subsidies that are provided to them monthly.
