Working at Missionaries can be very overwhelming for Western volunteers expecting more of a hospital or day-care environment. You may be shocked that children are allowed to live in these conditions, which are far below Western standards in all aspects: organization, health, safety and child development.

VFV Awards Scholarship Grants

by Angelynne V. Dumagsa

VFV Scholars

Volunteer for the Visayans once again achieved another milestone when they awarded full college scholarship grants to 3 active members of the Boys and Girls Clubs who also come from financially challenged families. The Coppage Commitment Scholarship for Science and Creativity Certificate was awarded to Jeffrey Anasta, a 2nd year high school student; the GoAbroad Foundation Service Scholarship was awarded to Francis Gerogalem, a 3rd year high school student; and the Jovita Mardo Hope Scholarship Certificate was awarded to Sheryl Encomio, a 4th year high school student. All 3 are studying at the Sagkahan National High School (SNHS) and are residents of Cluster II in Bliss, Sagkahan.

These students and active club members at the Volunteer for the Visayans center were chosen by the organization because of their excellent academic performance in school and great display of passion in helping their fellow club members and cooperation in the center activities.

VFV Scholars

Benefits include the payment of school fees, book allowance, uniform allowance, and academic field trips/excursions. After recipients graduate from college, they must render 4 years of volunteer service to VFV every Saturday and Sunday or if the recipients find a job they may choose to help another deserving VFV club member by sending him or her to an elementary school or high school for the same number of years they benefited from the scholarship program with the same benefits.

In an interview with the recipients we found out that Jeffrey Anasta wants to take up engineering, Francis Gerogalem wants to be a technician and Sheryl Encomio wants to take up computer science. These scholarships; indeed, have given these young students a clearer view of their future.
