Working at Missionaries can be very overwhelming for Western volunteers expecting more of a hospital or day-care environment. You may be shocked that children are allowed to live in these conditions, which are far below Western standards in all aspects: organization, health, safety and child development.

A Continuing Effort to Help the Guinsaugon Mudslide Victims

by Teisha de Veyra

Fire victims

Last February 17th of this year, 20-40 meters of mud and rocks swallowed the whole Barangay Guinsaugon in Southern Leyte, Philippines with over 1,000 people missing including an elementary school filled with teachers and pupils. The mudslide has left scores of injured and displaced hundreds of families. The VFV staff and some foreign volunteers responded by volunteering at the site of the mudslide where the team distributed much needed relief items including medicines and used clothing and provided food for the rescuers while doing their best to provide psychological support to those people affected by the disaster.

Fire victims

Now, VFV is set to go back to a nearby village in Guinsaugon where many of the surviving victims have settled to start a new life. Relief goods such as clothing and food donated by the Rotary Club of Capitol City New York USA and by some anonymous donors will be distributed to the distressed survivors. VFV is hoping that this little act of charity will help the victims in one way or another at this most difficult time of their lives.

The victims of the disaster still need your help. If you are interested in sending in-kind items for the victims or some financial contribution, please email marvin@visayans.org or call 053-325-2462.
