Working at Missionaries can be very overwhelming for Western volunteers expecting more of a hospital or day-care environment. Here is a list of suggested donations:

Orphanage

- TOYS! They should be durable and non-battery-operated.
- BOOKS ... board books are best, because paper pages tend to get ripped quickly.
- Diaper supplies: disposable diapers, wipes, diaper rash ointment, powder, plastic pants. Generally the kids use primitive cloth diapers that are ill-fitting and leak (a lot). If wipes are not available, you have to use toilet paper or just a clean corner of the old diaper as a wipe.
- Bath supplies: baby wash/baby shampoo, lotion, baby oil
- Kitchen supplies: bottles, child-size spoons, sippy cups, sharp knives for the kitchen staff

  1. School supplies, especially black shoes for both boys and girls (this is a necessary part of their school uniform)
  2. TB Medicines, Vitamins, colds and caugh medicines, clothes 0-4 years old.

If you are interested in making a large home-improvement donation to the orphanage and would like to know what is needed, Sr. Corine is the one to speak with. Remember that there are cultural differences, so things you may think are immediately necessary may be a low priority for the nuns (and vice versa). The nuns tend to be resistant to change, so the best approach is to not force your ideas on them, but be patient and willing to listen to several ideas they may have for a big gift. The home depends entirely on donations, so your help will go far to improve the kids' day-to-day lives.
